Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG) was established in Sierra Leone in July 2010. It is one of the largest resource investment companies in West Africa, comprising subsidiaries such as Kingho Mining Company and Kingho Railway & Port Company.
LRMG’s assets encompass an open-pit iron ore mine in Ferengbeya, Tonkolili, with a proven reserves of 11.9 billion tons (in accordance with JORC standards). The company produces both Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) with a grade of 57% and concentrate of 63%. In 2023, LRMG achieved an annual production output of approx. 9 million tons.
Presently, LRMG is in the process of constructing a 12 million tons transition layers mineral processing plant, slated for operation commencement in Aug 2024. Additionally, a magnetite processing plant with a capacity of 20 million tons is under development, with plans for operational initiation in Mar 2025. Upon completion of these projects, the company anticipates an increase in annual production to approx. 16 million tons.
LRMG also possesses a 192 KM railway and integrated port located in Pepel, Port Loko.
Over the recent year, the port operations have experienced exponential growth, exporting 16 million tons between 2021 and 2023, with a notable 8 million tons exported solely in 2023. Anticipated haulage will be 10 million tons in the year 2024.
Presently, the company holds an operational fleet comprising 11 locomotives and 427 wagons, each capable of carrying up to 78 tons of cargo. Additionally, the company has recently made significant investments, with the procurement of 10 state-of-the-art locomotive, scheduled for delivery by the end of March.
Looking ahead, the Bulk Mineral Commodity Rail Service is slated for a substantial capacity upgrade by the year 2025, aiming to facilitate the transportation of up to 20 million tons annually. This enhancement is allowing for the handling of six Transshipment vessels (TSVs) daily.
Positioning itself as an internationally comprehensive enterprise, LRMG integrates mining, processing, smelting, and steel production within Sierra Leone. This integration spans the entire iron ore supply chain, from extraction at the mine to steel production.
