What is Troupe Beat?
Troupe Beat is a fusion of indigenous Sierra Leonean instruments and rhythms with the core pulse of reggae music. It is a sound that draws inspiration from Sierra Leone’s rich musical traditions while reflecting the historical and cultural connections between Sierra Leone, the Caribbean and the wider African Diaspora.
How did it emerge?
Troupe Beat was conceptualized, developed and amplified by the One Nation Reggae Festival Team, comprising of Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Staff and Private Sector Production Experts in 2025. It emerged from a deliberate effort to create a sound that expresses Sierra Leone’s cultural identity through reggae while showcasing the country’s unique musical heritage.
What does it represent?
Troupe Beat represents Sierra Leone’s cultural memory, oral traditions, community spirit and creative resilience. It demonstrates how heritage can be reinterpreted for a new generation while remaining rooted in the stories, rhythms and experiences that define us as a people. At its core, it is a celebration of shared heritage and cultural connection.
How is it being used?
Since its introduction through the One Nation Reggae Festival Platform, Troupe Beat has found expression across multiple areas of the creative industry.
Jamaican artists such as Jah Thunder and Lucan I, together with Sierra Leonean artists including Block Jones, Dallas Bantan, Lyana, Thomas George and Baraka Village Boy, have incorporated the sound into their music productions.
Furthermore, artistic productions such as Songs of Njama have integrated the sound, demonstrating its relevance within theatre and storytelling.
Troupe Beat is also widely featured in audiovisual productions of our Year of Culture and Creativity.
The Vision
The long-term vision is for Troupe Beat to evolve into a recognized Sierra Leonean genre and signature sound that adds value to existing musical genres while creating new opportunities for artists, producers and performers.
As the sound continues to grow, it has the potential to become a distinctive cultural export, one that people around the world immediately associate with Sierra Leone, its heritage and its creativity.
